Epic Adventures on Adventure IO

Updated: May 17, 2021

If you’ve been dreaming of the waves you’ll surf and the mountains you’ll ride when the time is right, you’re not alone. After being confined to our homes for much of 2020, it’s fair to say most of us have pent up Adventure energy. That’s why we decided to launch EPIC Adventures – a selection of private “bucket-list” trips led by exceptional athletes. These aren’t your average outdoor activities. Think: exotic locations, luxury accommodations and memorable experiences crafted by world-renowned pros. And with travel finally feeling possible thanks to vaccines, they’re ready to go whenever you are.

Father and Son/Daughter Surf Trip to Costa Rica

If the most exciting thing you’ve done with your kid this past year is a puzzle, perhaps it’s time you booked this blow out surfing trip to Costa Rica (which is open to tourists now, FYI). Sam August, son of surf legend Robert August, will be your “professional surf concierge” in the town of Tamarindo, shuttling you to the best surf breaks over the course of a six-day stay.

When you’re not in the water, enjoy down time at your luxurious hotel Hacienda Pinilla (perhaps a few rounds of golf?), boat trips, town tours and a meet-and-greet with Robert August at his board-shaping workshop.

Custom Fishing and Diving Adventure in the Bahamas

If the Caribbean is calling your name, book this fishing trip with father and son team Tim and Danny Hampson in the Bahamas (which is now welcoming vaccinated travelers). Just know, this is not your average fishing trip. Danny is a professional wakeskater with a knack for capturing sea creatures, so whether you want to try big sport fishing from the deck of a boat, or submerge yourself in that perfect blue ocean for conching, lobstering and spear fishing, you’ll be returning to shore for a seafood dinner you’ll never forget.

Mountain Biking on Hornby Island, British Columbia with Darren Berrecloth

For an outdoor adventure that blends ocean, forest, trails and dramatic cliffs with plenty of action, consider this mountain biking trip to Hornby Island, British Columbia (Canada is slated to open at the end of May). Your host is professional free-ride mountain bike legend Darren Berrecloth, who grew up visiting this idyllic island and knows it like the back of his hand. Mountain biking features heavily, of course, but you can also hike Heliwell Provincial Park, chill on the beach, fish, visit artist studios and wineries, and round out the day with cocktails and campfires.

Fish and Surf in San Diego with Damien Hobgood

For a dreamy day spent in and on the water, look no further than this surfing and fishing trip on the sunshiny San Diego coast. Your guide, Damian Hobgood, World Surf League athlete, loves to share anecdotes from his professional career as well as techniques to help you progress as a surfer. Back on the boat, Captain Kody will teach you to fish and then fillet your catch, so it’s ready to be cooked. End the day with sundowners and a debrief in San Diego Harbor before returning to your hotel.

Sail to Catalina Island on a Yacht

If only the bougiest adventure will suffice (we all deserve a treat after the past year), check out this chartered yacht expedition to Santa Catalina. You and your group will hop aboard the Shambhala with Captain David Straky and his crew, and spend the day (or several: the yacht can sleep eight passengers overnight) exploring the bays and harbors of Santa Catalina. The Shambhala also comes with jet skis, paddle boards and an on-deck jacuzzi that’s best enjoyed with a glass of champagne.
